A Giant Draft

Did the Giants Make the Right Choice?

The New York Giants were able to fill some needs via the draft this past weekend. With the sixth overall pick, the Giants got some much needed help for Daniel Jones in Malik Nabers. Nabers looked impressive at LSU with 86 receptions and 14 touchdowns. He will be joining a wide receiver room featuring Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, and second year player Jalin Hyatt. Nabers has the opportunity to come in right away and make an impact. He will most likely get the chance to be Daniel Jones’ number one option this season, and can be a playmaker that the Giants have been looking for since Odell Beckham Junior

In the second round, the Giants selected safety Tyler Nubin from Minnesota. The decision to go secondary in the early rounds for the Giants was an easy one, with their defense giving up 229 passing yards per game last season. Nubin should get an opportunity to replace Xavier McKinney as the team’s starting free safety. The Giants made a great pick at a position of need in my opinion. With Kayvon Thibodeaux starting to make a name for himself, and the acquisition of Brian Burns, the Giants are set to be heavily improved on the defensive line. The backend of the defense was a struggle for the Giants last year, and hopefully Nubin can come and fill that hole that McKinney left.

The Case for Danny Dimes

Daniel Jones has been the center of great scrutiny since he arrived in New York. Even when he was picked, people questioned whether he was really worthy of the number 6 overall pick. Dwayne Haskins was seen as someone who the Giants could have taken, but ultimately slide down to the Commanders at 15. Again, people are wondering if Nabers could even be successful in a Giants uniform with Jones as his quarterback. People said to take McCarthy with that pick or possibly trade down and still grab a  quarterback. After getting paid, Daniel Jones got hurt last season. He did not play himself to the bench. He got injured and did not play the majority of the season. I do not think that you could justify taking a quarterback and moving on from Jones already if you are GM Joe Schoen.

If you really look at the needs of the Giants, they hit it out of the park with their draft, especially with their first pick. Without Nabers, the Giants are back to starting Slayton and Robinson with Daniel Jones as their quarterback. With a new quarterback, you are still throwing the ball to Slayton and Robinson, a recipe for disaster no matter who is behind center. The fact is that Daniel Jones is a good quarterback. He is capable of winning games, and winning big games as we saw against the Vikings in the playoffs. By picking Nabers, the Giants are finally surrounding Jones with some talent. It wouldn’t be fair to drive him out of town when he hasn’t really gotten a fair opportunity to shine. Yes he fumbles a lot and makes some careless mistakes at times, but his last healthy season, he was able to play great and lead the Giants to a playoff game victory on the road.
